A refrigerator is the appliance your household notices fastest when it fails — and usually the one with the most to lose if the repair drags on. Our first visit is a full diagnostic: we read the sealed system, check the evaporator, test the inverter or start relay, and tell you honestly whether the unit is worth saving. Refrigeration is roughly 60% of what I do in a given week, and it has been for three decades.
What we fix most often
- Compressors & sealed-system work — start relays, inverter boards, overloads, refrigerant leaks (on units that warrant it)
- Ice makers — Sub-Zero dual-evaporator ice machines, Whirlpool-style in-door, KitchenAid internal
- Defrost problems — bi-metals, timers, defrost heaters, thermistors, mainboards
- Water & ice dispensers — inlet valves, water filters, dispenser switches, stuck flappers
- Mystery water on the floor — clogged defrost drains, cracked drain pans, door gasket failures
The defrost calls deserve a note, because they fool everybody. The complaint is always “the fridge is warm but the freezer’s fine” — or the reverse — and the owner has usually been told they need a compressor. Most of the time it’s a $40 defrost component or a thermistor. The evaporator ices over, airflow dies, and the fresh-food side climbs into the 50s while the compressor runs perfectly. Twenty minutes with a meter sorts it out, and it’s one of the cheapest fixes in the trade.
Built-in and luxury refrigerators
Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, Miele, Liebherr and GE Monogram built-ins are some of the most common units we service. We stock start-relay kits, condenser fans and evaporator fans for the top three on the shelf, so many repairs are one-visit jobs. Torrance also has a healthy population of compact and counter-depth units — the city’s Japanese-American families were early adopters of smaller, efficient refrigeration, and I service plenty of Liebherr and compact Bosch boxes in kitchens where a 36" French-door was never the plan.
Living near the water? Read this
Homes west of Pacific Coast Highway — the Hollywood Riviera especially — kill condensers young. Salt air corrodes the condenser fins and the fan motor bearings, the coil loses its ability to shed heat, and the compressor runs hot and long until it quits years ahead of schedule. On a built-in Sub-Zero that’s an expensive way to lose a good machine. If you’re in the salt zone, have the condenser cleaned every year instead of every two or three; it’s a modest service visit against a four-figure sealed-system job. Inland, in Southwood or the Seaside Ranchos tracts, the bigger enemy is the garage “beer fridge” running in 95° summer garage heat — those units are working twice as hard as the kitchen box and fail accordingly.
Repair or replace, by age
My rough math, and I’ll put it on the invoice either way:
- Under 8 years — repair. Almost any single failure pencils out, including inverter boards.
- 8–15 years, standard brands — repair anything but a sealed-system failure. A compressor job on a $1,200 fridge rarely makes sense; on anything less than that, never.
- 8–15 years, built-ins — repair, including most sealed-system work. A Sub-Zero at 15 is middle-aged, and replacement starts around $10,000 plus carpentry.
- Past 15 years — depends entirely on the machine. A 500-series Sub-Zero, yes. A big-box French-door with a failing main board, probably not, and I’ll say so.
What it costs
